Show Review: Port O'Brien, Anna Egge, Flying Canyon @ Make-Out Room
The bay area CrazyTalkers descended on The Make-Out Room on Thursday night for yet another musical adventure.
Once again we relied on Daimian's weekly pick - this time Port O'Brien, a local "folk-ish type of rock and roll group that is the project of Van Pierszalowski." To get an idea, they've opened for Man Man, Akron/Family, Vetiver and Little Wings.
Flying Canyon and Anna Egge opened up. We weren't feeling either. The former too droney and the latter too Emily Saliersey.
Port O'Brien put on a great show. Van switched up on acoustic and electric guitar. Minimalist banjo. Drums. Acoustic bass. And two percussion players. Harmonies.
Not every band makes me instantly think of other bands, but this one did. Violent Femmes and Cloud Cult. Griz called them Rusted (root) Milk Hotel. Because of this, I was initially skeptical, but by the end I wanted them to keep playing.
We listened to a smattering of two albums on the way home, but neither one bit me in the ass.

I'd be real surprised if there is any artist that really compares to Ana Egge - as far as the whole deal writing singing and guitar talent - but I'll check out that girl Emily that was mentioned. If there's anybody as good as Ana ability - I haven't found one yet in the last 10 years.
